Lyrics

We all went to the park to celebrate your little brother’s birthday
And someone gave him a shiny mylar helium balloon
But, since he’s only two, well, he was easily distracted
And so he gave his new balloon to you.

We were walking to the playground the balloon was in your hand
There were so many people visiting the park that day.
While we stopped to say hello I guess someone stepped on the string
And that shiny new balloon floated away.

It drifted up and away
Slowly wafting upward to the sky
It drifted up and away
And that’s when you began to cry.

Your daddy took you in his arms and asked you “Sweetheart, what’s the matter?’
He’d do anything to make you lose that frown
You just pointed skyward and then looked at him, expecting
That he’d extend his hand and pull it down.

But then your daddy said “Hey look! I see an airplane!
It’s about a mile up in the sky!
Do you think that there’s a little girl like you up in that plane?
And do you think that she’ll see your balloon pass by?

You looked at your daddy, You looked at the balloon
You gazed up at the airplane and time stood still awhile
You thought of that imaginary little girl up there
And that was how your daddy made you smile.

It drifted up and away
Slowly wafting upward to the sky
It drifted up and away
While you were laughing going down the slide.
