Lyrics

No tree, no lights, no Christmas tunes till after turkey day.
This is the first big rule of Christmas
If you grew up in my house
You would know no other way
You learn to know and love the rules of Christmas
You’ve gotta grab the eggnog just as soon as it appears
Cause New Year’s Day is coming-
That’s the day it disappears
And the hearts of young and old grow lighter
As the day draws near
These are some basic rules of Christmas.

Everybody’s got some rules at Christmas
I hope their not too rigid
They’re just traditions that we cling to
When the air outside turns frigid
So on this day we celebrate God’s gift sent from above
The most important rule of Christmas is love.

The gifts stay wrapped and underneath the tree till Christmas morn
This is another rule of Christmas.
And don’t forget we celebrate that Christ the Lord was born
This is the biggest rule of Christmas.
The kids are going crazy Christmas Eve, and daddy knows.
“I guess you all could open up just one, I suppose.”
But mom is gonna choose which one
And you know it will be clothes.
These are the hard, cold rules of Christmas.

Everybody’s got some rules at Christmas
I hope their not too rigid
They’re just traditions that we cling to
When the air outside turns frigid
So on this day we celebrate God’s gift sent from above
The most important rule of Christmas is love.

The rule is that the kids will wake before the break of dawn
And we empty out the stockings while mom puts the coffee on
The rule is dad makes spicy apple pancakes, nice and hot.
The rule is holding hands and giving thanks for everything we’ve got.

Everybody’s got some rules at Christmas
I hope their not too rigid
They’re just traditions that we cling to
When the air outside turns frigid
So on this day we celebrate God’s gift sent from above
The most important rule of Christmas is love.

We gather round the tree
Dad hands out presents - one by one.
There’s smiles and hugs and thank-you’s after every single one
And everyone there at the tree knows that they’re truly loved.
This is my favorite rule of Christmas.
